New, more secure SingPass with 2-step verification system to roll out on July 5

SINGAPORE - A new, more secure SingPass will be rolled out on Sunday, aimed at strengthening the convenience and security of the account for online government services.

The Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) said it will also feature more mobile-friendly features and an improved user interface.

Under the enhanced SingPass, certain sensitive e-government services, such as checking one's CPF or filing taxes, will require 2-step verification (2FA).

After the initial SingPass password is entered, the system will send a separate one-time password either through SMS or through a OneKey security token.

More than 60 per cent of government e-services will require 2FA by the end of 2015, said IDA. There are currently over 200 e-services that require the password to log in to.

Users will also receive SMS or e-mail notifications when there are updates or changes made to their account.

Users can log in to www.singpass.gov.sg any time after July 5 to update their SingPass account and set up the 2FA.

There will be a one-year transition period for users to set up their 2-step verification. After July 5 2016, users who have not set up their 2-step verification will not be able to access government e-services that involve sensitive information.

In preparation for the launch, users will not be able to make changes to account details, such as password or profile changes from Thursday, July 2 11.59pm until July 4 10pm. They will still be able to access government e-services.

All government e-services using SingPass will also be unavailable from Saturday, July 4, 10pm to July 5 10am.
